In a world challenged by ethnic conflicts and fundamentalism, how can colleges and universities foster tolerance and understanding? This essay draws on two days of lively conversation in June 2003, when 30 college and university leaders from the United States, Canada, and Europe met to discuss higher education’s role in developing pluralist societies.
The June 2003 event was part of ACE’s Transatlantic Dialogue series. Established in 1989, Transatlantic Dialogue is a series of biennial meetings at which higher education leaders engage in-depth conversations on contemporary higher education issues. Approximately 30 presidents, rectors, and vice chancellors from the United States, Canada, and Europe attend the invitation-only meetings.
